Q. I recently had my photograph taken at an event but, it wasn’t used in the magazine why is that and how can I order a reprint?
A.So sorry about that – quite often our photographers take more pictures than we have space for, but all
images appear online.
So, all you have to do is
go online at: www.yorkshiretoday.net and click Online Magazine in the top menu. Then turn to the appropriate page in our digital magazine. Then click on the
heading to that event and you’ll be able to see all the images we took on the night.
Q. My local newsagent keeps selling out of Yorkshire Today. What do I have to do to get a copy?
A.I can’t understand your newsagent not ordering more as all our magazines are supplied
sale or return which means he/she only pays for what they sell!
Fear not though you can order a copy direct from us or why not subscribe and get
a copy every month posted to you – that way you’ll get your copy before the newsagent even gets theirs !! We’ll even pay the postage for you.
Q. I keep entering competitions in your magazine but haven’t won a thing what do I have to do to improve my chances?
A.Well you could tuck a fiver in the envelope – no just joking honest!! – The best thing you can do is get your entry in as early as possible. We get an
enormous number of entries to our competitions and free giveaways so any
entries that come in after the closing date miss out!
Q. We can supply pre written editorial for your publication/special reports
would you like it – is there any payment for these?
A.We are always grateful for contributions but, in order for us to be able to
publish them, they would need to be independent. As we have our own full time
team of journalists it is very rare that we contract work out, so we don’t usually pay for these. (see freelance contributions)
Q. I often advertise with your magazine but don’t seem to be able to get editorial coverage why is that and how can I improve my
chances on that?
A.We’re always happy to consider editorial that’s newsworthy and will always prioritise coverage of advertisers events over non
advertisers but obviously if we simply included editorial regardless of its
news value for advertisers then the magazine would be full of advertorials
which tends to lose the readers interest and without readers there would be no
point in advertising in the magazine.
Everything we do is aimed at increasing
the number of readers which translates into a better response for our
advertisers so just make sure your contributions are newsworthy then have a
word with your rep who’ll draw my attention to it.
Q. I have sent a number of press releases in but don’t seem to have much success in getting them published, how can I improve my
success rate?
A.Firstly, try to ensure the press release is aimed squarely at out target
readership. Secondly always supply images with the article as we are a full
colour magazine and tend to avoid using press releases that are text only.
Q. How do I know if my press release/contribution has been used?
A.You will be notified and sent a voucher copy, however if you want to double
check you can check our web site www.yorkshiretoday.net where you can view the magazine and its entire contents on line – you can also view back copies of magazines.
I’m a freelance photographer can you tell me if your magazine uses freelance
photographers and if so what the rates of pay are?
A.We’re always on the lookout for good photography for our magazines and
occasionally we contract a freelance photographer but usually we send this
work to one of our approved freelancers.
To get on the approved list you would
need to send us examples of your work and be prepared to attend one or two jobs
free of charge initially (this is so we can assess your work, manner and
aptitude as some photographers have been known in the past to send in shots
that are nowehere near as good as the samples they showed us!)
Usually after we’ve worked together for a few months we can add you to our approved list and
payment for work is then agreed before each assignment.
Q. I’m a freelance journalist and wondered what rates you pay for contributions?
A. We rarely pay for editorial submissions as we have our own in house team of journalists and as such need to keep them fully utilised. From time to time we are contacted by individuals who enjoy writing and like to see their work in print and in general these are the only contributions you will see in the magazine.
Should there be any change to this the Editor will discuss this with you at the time of commission and, in such exceptions, agree a fee and/or expenses. We will also explain the main points to be covered in your contribution, and any special requirements. Unless the Editor agrees a fee in writing all contributions submitted are deemed useable free of charge.
The freelancer will also be responsible for ensuring contributions are their own work, including any/all images and indemnify the publisher against any breach of copyright or other action.

Q. We’re planning a society event and wondered how we get your publication to cover
it?
A.A Easy just give us a call or drop us a line and we’ll be in touch. If it’s a charity event we may even be able to supply you with an auction/raffle
prize.
I run a PR company – I wonder if you can you tell me what features you have coming up in the next month or two?
A.The easiest way to find this is to click on the menu bar under Advertising and take a look at our special report list which covers the whole 12 months.
Q. I have a client who I think would make an interesting case study for your
magazine. Would you be interested in this?
A.Absolutely but first you’ll need to send us a brief synopsis, and of course, if it ties in with one of our
special reports so much the better.
These can be sent to
newsdesk@blmgroup.co.uk but please make sure they are newsworthy –the worst one I can recall is where a PR company said their client was
undergoing a radical new corporate image makeover. In fact the press release
was about a client putting up a new sign!
Q. How do I know if an image is too small to be used in your magazine and in
what format should I send it?
A.All our pictures are printed at a resolution of 300dpi. If you are unsure of the size and only have basic photographic applications on your pc you can use Paint. XP Users - Start > All Programs > Accessories > Paint
The menu bar at the top has Image > Attributes
This displays the dpi and size in cm. If the resolution if 75 x 75 you need to multiply this by 4 to create 300dpi therefore the size need to be divided by 4. So 75 x 75 dpi and size 10 x 10cm will only be 2.5cm x 2.5cm when printed
